As is generally known, the classic Ukrainian embroidery is two-colored. The most common combinations are “white + black” (meaning life and death), “red + black” (meaning love and death), and “red + blue” (meaning man and woman). We decided to change the tradition and painted the second part of antique Ukrainian patterns dedicated to an oak tree. We used the following colors: DMC 300 (mahogany – vy dk), DMC 320 (pistachio green – md), DMC 367 (pistachio green – dk), DMC 606 (burnt orange-red), DMC 976 (golden brown – md). Hope you’ll like it. :)

An Oak and Guelder-Rose – motifs which are most common on young boys’ shirts in which the symbols of strength and beauty are united, that is extraordinary strength and eternal beauty. The oak is a sacred tree, personified by Perun, the god of male, solar energy which prolongs life. We have already referred to the “kalyna” as the tree of birth. In this way boys and young men were invested with the magical protection of the life-giving strength of their sex.
